    Testing in a business gateway

While the predominant story of broadband gateways is usually found in home devices, gateways designed for business class broadband are more robust and contain very complex features that require rigorous testing. As the line between enterprise network devices and broadband blurs, you will find many gateways that are managed and maintained by one of the most popular management protocols, the Simple Network Manament Protocl (SNMP).

Designed by the IETF in a number of RFCs, SNMP offers a way for an SNMP Network Management Station (NMS) to interact with one or more agents that interact with managed devices. This interaction occurs through a variety of Protocol Data Units (PDUs) used for configuring a device, reading its state, or to be notified of alarms or other information. The information is defined through a Management Information Base, which is either standardized or defined by the manufacturer, and contains all of the objects and parameters necessary to manage the device.

    NMS Simulation and MIB testing

CDRouter SNMP creates an NMS simulator that can be used to exercise all of the standard SNMP PDUs. In addition, we’ve added several tests for items managed by SNMP from standard MIBs common among broadband gateways, including IPv6 and IPv4 as well as interface statistics verification.

To complete the picture, CDRouter SNMP lets you import your own MIBs to test aspects specific to your DUT.

We’re happy to include SNMP to our growing list of CDRouter add-ons, and increasing what CDRouter can do for both home and business broadband devices!
